If you live in a hotter climate when the summer months role around it can be tempting to just shut out the sun to keep your rooms shady and be able to turn your air conditioning down. Many people choose to do this with metal shutters or thick curtains.  However a more stylish and traditional approach might be to use Roman Blinds. In ancient Rome citizens used to hang damp sheets over their windows in the hottest months to try and keep their homes a bit cooler. This evolved into the Roman blind.

Unlike shutters, Roman blinds come in a wide variety of materials so you can find something that will fit with your room’s decor. However if you want to go completely ancient Rome, why not make that your rooms theme.  Upper-class citizens of ancient Rome lived in extreme luxury and you can capture much of that in your room’s decor. Choosing a colour scheme that’s filled with creams will both help produce this feel as well as aiding in keeping your room cool. Choose to finish your walls with plaster rather than wall paper. This will again help keep room temperatures down and also help make your room feel Roman.

When looking for decorations to finish your room, you can find many interesting pottery ornaments that would look right at home in any ancient Rome styled room.  If your house is warm all year round you could further help keep it cool by having your floor tiled. This is less appealing however if you have cold winters, in which case you can keep your ancient Rome feel with a hard wood floor topped with a cosy rug. Large clay Potts filled with hose plants would also be a great accompaniment to this style.

When choosing furniture select pieces made either from wood or that have a more minimalistic design. The idea is not to create something that looks authentic of ancient Rome but instead just presents the feel of it. Therefore it is more important to adorn your house with modern comforts rather than worry yourself with anachronisms.
